Students use BigO app to map food advertisements in Stockholm

IEGS.1

Using the BigO mobile app, a team of IEGS high school students completed a school project about mapping all the food advertisements in two separate Stockholm areas. Between May 30th and June 1st, 8 IEGS students and 3 KI researchers visited shopping centres in Östermalm (central Stockholm) and Skärholmen (South Stockholm) and photographed all the advertisements in these areas, with the intention to quantify the prevalence of food-related advertisements and the frequency of promotion of sugary drinks and fast-food food items. The student efforts resulted in more than 2000 pictures being uploaded in the BigO system, creating a full mappings of food advertisement in two Stockholm neighbourhoods which differ significantly in regards to their socioeconomic characteristics.
